My husband loves surprises. He loves being surprised and he loves planning surprises. He surprised me when he proposed in Boston on an elaborate surprise trip, he surprised me with a packing list for our honeymoon instead of telling me the destination. And those are just two examples.
Several weeks ago we were all eating dinner and Dave began to tease me in front of everyone about how I can’t surprise him. That’s only partially true. It’s true that I don’t surprise him very much even though I know he loves surprises. But it’s not because I don’t try. It’s just that my surprises aren’t nearly as effective as his.
I have this problem: I can’t seem to keep surprises a secret for very long. I’ll buy him a Christmas present in November, then I’ll show it to him on Thanksgiving. Awful problem, I know. And here’s the kicker… Dave is very smart. Very smart. He figures out surprises I want to do for him before I can even think of them. So you see how I am in a Catch 22 with trying to do surprises for him?
Anyway, I went to the doctor’s office on Thursday to get a checkup and walked away with a big secret. If only… I could… keep it… a secret… until… Father’s Day… in 4 days… I so desperately wanted to call our families and a few of my dearest friends and let them in on the secret. But I knew if I did that then the surprise would be all over and I would end up talking about it in my sleep or something.
Well, Mr You-Can’t-Surprise-Me, I did it.
I didn’t tell a soul. I kept this little secret between me, the Lord, and my obstetrician.
