Many of our unsuspecting friends were the recipients of phone calls from little Norah last week.
- Did she heist my phone and figure out how to phone the last-dialed number?
- Is Norah beginning an entrepreneurial venture in telemarketing?
- Is she using her “lifelines” in Who Wants to be a Homeschooled Millionaire?
No, no, and no.
We finally figured out the incentive Norah needed to potty train… bragging rights.
Bragging rights are free. Which is awesome, because I was about to start offering her cash to go on the potty.
But all we needed was a jar of jellybeans for her to share (because we all win when a little one goes on the potty) and a friendly voice on the other line who was ready to celebrate with a very excited nearly-3-year-old.
In case you weren’t privy to a phone call, a typical conversation went like this:
Me: You did it! Hooray Norah!
Norah: I get jellybeans! I wanna call…hmm…Sam and Amara!
Norah: [while phone is still ringing] Heyyo? Heyyo! Sam! I pee da potty!
Me: It’s still ringing, Honey.
Norah: Oh. Sam! Sam! Amara!
Me: It’s still ringing.
Norah: Ok, Momma. Ok. HEYYO? SAM! AMA-
[phone gets picked up]
Sam: Hello?
Norah: Uh. Hi.
Me: Hi Sam? It’s Norah. She wants to tell you someth–
Norah: I GO PEE PEE!
Sam: You what? Huh? Gloria? Norah? Ooooooooh! Did you go in the potty?
Norah: YESSSSSSSS!
[commence cheering and discussing which color of jelly beans we are choosing to eat]
Norah soon figured out who was most likely to shout and holler with her on the phone, so she frequently selected those friends to tell. She even made videos of herself talking about her potty adventures for me to email to people overseas.
One person got so used to hearing Norah’s voice on the other end of the line that when I dialed them they picked up and said, “Did you go in the potty AGAIN?!”
